Rivals unite to fight cancer

Fans asked to help raise money for Teen Cancer Challenge by purchasing T-shirts, balloons.

— When rival football teams the Bentonville Tigers and the Rogers Mounties face off on Oct. 16, there will be one guaranteed winner - The Teen Cancer Challenge.

Students, faculty and fans from the two schools are hosting a variety of fundraising activities with proceeds benefiting local cancer programs.

Individuals can order a BHS/RHS Teen Cancer Challenge Shirt for $10 from any BHS Cheer or Dance Team member, or online at www.cancerchallenge.com, before Oct. 12. Orders will be accepted event week at Threads, located at 1103 S.E. 15th St. in Bentonville. Fans who wear their T-shirts to the game will receive free Edy's ice cream.

Balloons are also being sold for $1 in honor or in memory of cancer victims. The balloons are available through the RHS Student Council, BHS Spirit Squad and Arvest Bank locations in Bentonville and Rogers. Balloons in school colors will be launched just moments prior to kickoff on Oct. 16.

Two local restaurants have agreed to "Unite in the Fight" by hosting spirit nights for Tiger, Mountie and Cancer Challenge fans. Dine in at Chick-fil-A at 209 S. Walton in Bentonville or 4001 W. Walnut in Rogers on Oct. 13 and Buffalo Wild Wings in Bentonville on Oct. 14, and a percentage of sales between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will be donated to the Teen Cancer Challenge.

In preparation for the big game, Bentonville High School and the Teen Cancer Challenge are teaming up for an evening pep rally on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., just east of the BHS campus. Festivities include a bon fire, car bashing, a giant inflatable slide, music and free food.

Tigers and Mounties fans will "Unite for the Fight" one last time before kickoff at a Teen Cancer Challenge Tailgate Party on Oct. 16 across from the Bentonville Tiger Stadium. Fans can enjoy free food, music, and fun and games from 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Village Aces Dan Lind's recent visit to Bella Vista included a memorable moment on the Bella Vista Country Club Golf Course.

Lind, who has been a golfer for half a century, achieved his first holein-one Sept. 10 while playing the 11th hole of the Bella Vista course. His 7-iron sent the ball 119 yards to the cup.

The ace was witnessed by Lind's playing partners, Larry Williams and Dick Johnson.

Roberta Dale of Bella Vista scored her first hole-in-one Sept. 7 with her husband, Greg, as one of the witnesses.

She was playing the Highlands Golf Course when, on hole No. 9, her 8-iron hit the ball 72 yards and into the cup.

Also witnessing Dale's first ace in seven years of playing the game were Tom Chappell and Debbie Gardine.
