— Finding a physician who listens helps keep seniors healthy.

"If your physician will not listen to you, then you need to find another physician," said Margaret Christensen, coordinator of outreach education for the Bella Vista Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education.

"Find a good general physician who knows you," she said.

Patients should tell their doctors about any changes they have noticed. Even simple changes, such as dry skin or hair loss, will give the doctor clues about what tests to perform.

Dry skin and hair loss may not be signs of aging but may be symptoms of a thyroid problem.

Also, be sure to mention any changes in moods. Depression, for example, may be a physical problem.

Tell the doctor about any aches and pains.

"Share with the physician how you feel and what isn't right," Christensen said. "Share anything that's different."

In addition to talking to doctors, people need to remember, "Healthy aging is a lifelong process that starts with exercising, eating right and keeping mentally stimulated with new activities," she said.

People who want information about their health can visit the Bella Vista Health Resource Center, located in the Highlands Crossing Center. The center has handouts, pamphlets and a wealth of information, volunteer coordinator Pat Wardell said. The hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
